A Christmas Carol

adapted by Michael Shamata,
from the story by Charles Dickens

Globe Theatre, 2017

Designer Laura Gardner and I have collaborated on a number of projects. Often we like to team up with Louise Guinand to light the work. A few of my favourite shows have been with this team, at Globe Theatre. Laura has an intimate understanding of how to maximize visual impact working in the round. This floor was one of her most elegant masterstrokes. It was created using thousands of 4x4 wood end cuts, individually stained, and carefully laid out to create this beautiful cobblestone pattern. The wood transformed under Louise’s light.

In Michael Shamata’s sensitive rendering of Dickins’ story, the same actor who plays Jacob Marley, also plays the ghosts in all three visitations. Here, Kevin Rothery as the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and To Come, torments Oliver Becker’s Scrooge. photos: JL Photo
